A company with its own operations uses us differently than a consumer-owned waterworks. The large utility has often narrowed the problem down to a zone and needs a dig point quickly. The small waterworks may only know that water is disappearing somewhere in the network, and have neither zone meters nor history to read.
The work therefore looks different at the beginning and the same at the end. We start by demarcating, and we end with a marked point in the terrain and a measurement that can be documented.
The methods and why we switch between them along the way
We listen acoustically with a ground microphone, we correlate between two measurement points, and we use tracer gas when the sound is not enough. The choice depends on the pipe material and what is above the pipe. The correlation requires access at both ends and is strongest on long, straight sections. The tracer gas is harmless, it is injected into the pipe and searches up through the ground above the leak, and it also finds leaks that do not give a usable sound image — with an accuracy of a few centimeters.
Where the card material does not fit, wire search We trace pipelines and service lines and mark the route before measuring. Otherwise, you risk placing the ground microphone next to the pipe and drawing the wrong conclusion.
Operations departments that already monitor the buildings' other systems are often surprised that the water pipes are running blindly. They don't need to: Both individual measurements and permanent monitoring can be integrated into existing operations.
Multi-year agreements where the network is taken area by area
Some customers call when the damage has occurred. Others set a fixed rhythm. We divide the network into defined areas and go through one or two areas at a time, so that the entire supply area has been covered over a few seasons — and then we start over where the numbers have since run out.
The advantage for a small waterworks is that the work becomes an item in the budget instead of an unforeseen expense. The advantage for a larger supply is that the review can be arranged around the planned renovations, so you know which sections are losing water before the excavator is ordered. The water loss is calculated professionally as North Rhine-Westphalia, and a regional review gives the board a basis on which to monitor developments.
Division of labor with your plumbers or contractor
DWI does not dig or repair. We locate the leak and mark it on site, and you receive documentation of the measurements. The repair is carried out by your own plumber or contractor, and we are happy to talk directly with them about what we have measured and where the cut should be made.
