Leak detection in Aarhus
The water disappears long before anyone notices.
A leaky supply line under Åboulevarden or a branch line in Risskov rarely shows itself. The water seeps into the ground, and the bill grows – until one day the asphalt sinks or the pressure drops.
DWI A / S locates hidden leaks before they get that far. We carry out leak detection in Aarhus and all of East Jutland – for water supplies of all sizes and for properties and businesses where water loss directly affects operations. The break is identified so precisely that one place is dug instead of three.
Emergency leak detection in Aarhus, or planned network inspection
If the water is already in the roadway, it is important to locate the break quickly. DWI responds to acute breaks, and because we work with leak detection every single day, it takes a short time from first listening to a marked excavation point.
However, the most expensive leaks are often the ones that no one is in a hurry to fix. A water loss of a few cubic meters per hour can go undetected for years if no one is systematically looking for it. That is why we offer planned reviews of supply zones – preferably as multi-year agreements, where water loss is mapped zone by zone, and the reduction can be documented to the board and authorities.
How leak detection works in Aarhus
Aarhus is a city of two tempos. The city center's pipe network is many decades old, while new districts around the harbor are laid with modern plastic pipes – and the two networks sound very different when you listen for a leak. The choice of method is therefore always determined by the specific task, and we advise on this before the work begins.
Rough location is typically done acoustically with a ground microphone and hand-held headphones, after which a correlator calculates the exact position of the leak based on the signal measured at two points on the pipe. Experience makes the difference here: a low-pressure leak in a plastic pipe sounds completely different than a break in cast iron, and city traffic constantly adds noise to the signal.
If the leak is silent – which happens, especially at low pressure – we switch to tracer gas. A harmless gas is sent through the line and the surface is scanned for leakage. This way, even leaks without an audible signal can be pinpointed with great accuracy.
Wire search is often the first step: If you don't know exactly where the pipe is, you can't listen in the right places. We locate everything from pipe runs to valves as an integral part of the task.
Surveillance that catches the next leak before you do?
Field work solves the problem today. If you also want to know about tomorrow's leaks, the network can be permanently monitored with data loggers that register changes in the noise picture and automatically alert. Combined with the HydrantAI platform, data from the entire supply network is collected in one place, so that an incipient leak is detected while it is still cheap to repair.

How much does leak detection cost in Aarhus?
Think about it: Water that is pumped out but never billed for – called NRW, Non Revenue Water in the industry – puts a strain on the operating budget year after year. Added to this are the excavation costs, which multiply if excavation is done based on guesswork rather than precise location.
In other words, leak detection in Aarhus is rarely an expense that needs to be defended at length to financial managers.

From utility company to housing association
A large East Jutland utility company and a smaller waterworks with one operations manager face very different challenges – and therefore receive very different solutions from us. We help housing associations and commercial properties with leak detection in Aarhus – both in private installations and in shared supply lines, where downtime is directly felt in operations.
We also carry out tasks throughout Eastern Jutland, including Randers, Silkeborg, Horsens and Viborg.
Equipment and skills for your own operations
If you want to be able to listen to the leaks yourself, DWI sells and leases professional measuring equipment – and services it afterwards. We are an authorized distributor of, among others, Gutermann and advise on the instrument package that suits your network. And if you want to take the skills home, DWI Leak Academy holds a basic course in line and leak detection at DTU Science Park in Hørsholm, where theory is combined with exercises on the test track.

Yes. Plastic pipes conduct sound less well than metal, so we often supplement the acoustics with tracer gas or correlation. We work with all common pipe types.
Yes – with data loggers and the HydrantAI platform, which automatically alerts you to deviations from normal operation.
No. Pipeline search is included as part of the task if the pipe route has not been mapped.
